A downtown that likes a good night out.
Larkspur has the kind of downtown where people walk to dinner and stay for the music. Special Lady Friend is a six-piece band built for exactly that: a soul, blues, funk and rock set that works under a restaurant conversation and then pulls the room onto its feet when the tables move.
Two vocalists trading lines, guitar that moves between chicken-picked funk and slow blues, a bass player holding the pocket, a drummer who lives in the groove, and a mandolin filling the spaces a keyboard usually takes. Familiar songs from the soul and R&B catalog sit next to blues and rock numbers, so a room with mixed ages keeps hearing something it knows.
We play neighborhood parties, school and club fundraisers, restaurant anniversaries and backyard birthdays. Because the band came up locally, the setlist is built for people who grew up on this music rather than for a tourist crowd. We can also shorten to an acoustic-leaning trio for a smaller gathering if the guest list stays under thirty.
We carry our own backline and vocal system, arrive early enough for a real sound check, and keep an evening to two or three sets with a short break. Date, venue and hours are all we need to quote a night, and we answer every inquiry with a yes, a no, or a date that works better.
